Wishes for Weston
Last Thanksgiving while families were gathering to share good food and laughs, a young, happy family from Westbrook received the news that their 1.5 year old son, Weston, had a rare, high-risk, aggressive form of cancer called neuroblastoma.
Weston’s parents, Sam and Kristin Lane are unsung heroes of the Southern Maine community. Sam has dedicated the last 8 years to growing the sport of lacrosse as the Head Coach at USM and started several lacrosse camps and tournaments for youth. His coaching helps build self-esteem, athleticism, and ultimately opens doors for careers. Kristin is a Special Education teacher and currently a Case Manager at The Margaret Murphy Center for Children in Saco where she creates customized curriculums and works with students everyday to help them achieve their behavioral and educational goals.
Over the past 5 months, Sam, Kristin and their oldest son, Coby have shown nothing less than herculean strength as Weston has undergone several rounds of chemotherapy and surgeries. Like his family, Weston has been a true warrior through it all. Continuously bouncing back (always faster than expected), with a big smile, a zest for life and usually with his favorite stuffed animal “Bear” in his hand!
This summer, Weston will be doing two back-to-back stem cell transplants. If you were to ask his family how they’re doing it, they would immediately tell you they’re not alone. The support from their friends, extended family and community has helped them every step of the way. Whether it was a thoughtful text, a meal dropped off, a package sent or a fundraising event organized by a colleague - it’s made all the difference.
The Wishes for Weston Bike Team is training for the Dempsey Challenge in honor of Weston and his family and to show support for all the other families in Maine that have been effected by cancer. If they can continue to fight everyday, the least we can do is push ourselves up a few hills with them in mind.
Please consider helping our team raise funds and awareness by making a donation to one of our team members. We also invite you to come cheer us on at the event, September 28-29!
Thank you for helping us work toward our fundraising goal. Every dollar donated directly benefits the Dempsey Center, a leader in quality of life care for individuals and families impacted by cancer.
